Highway 1
Highway 1These images, from an ongoing collaborative project with fellow photographer Matt Abbott, follows the longest continuous highway in the world, Highway 1.  This major highway stretches across all states in Australia (including a loop in Tasmania) and joins all the mainland state capitals. At a total length of approximately 14,500 km it is among the longest highways in the world. Every day more than a million people travel on a part of it. Drawing inspiration from the 1967 coffee table publication "Around Australia on Highway One" by George Farwell, Matt and I are photographing life both on and off the highway and in the process re-examining cultural understandings of what it means to be Australian today.Almost 50 years after this seminal book was published, we are finding that the more things change, the more they stay the same. This set of images were taken along Highway 1 between Sydney, NSW and Cairns, FNQ.
